Subject specific awareness

Subject specific awareness is vital for any person or programme looking to decolonise their teaching, curriculum and culture. However, it is very difficult for the DecolBMS group to provide every subject covered under the umbrella of BMS with subject specific resources. As such we have done our best to gather resources that might prove useful and stimulating under the Decolonise BMS reading list below.

Reading lists

The following reading lists are available at the University of Bristol and might be helpful as you explore the concept of decolonisation as applied to your speciality. However, these lists are not exhaustive, and if you have content you wish to add, or if you wish to make your own speciality specific reading list please let us know so we can add links to this website. Creating subject specific content will be an ongoing community effort, but we are happy to platform this work and disseminate it as best we can:

  • Decolonising BMS – this is a reading list generated to support this website. It contains useful videos, journals, books and articles exploring ideas connected to decolonisation, including not only race but ideas such queer theory and social models of disability.
  • Decolonising Medicine – a broad selection with insight into a wider range of considerations
  • Decolonising the Curriculum – a broad reading list around the topic of decolonisation within wider education
  • Decolonising the Library – very library specific content but there is other, more general, information that might be useful
  • Decolonising Literature and Literary Studies – a reading list that explores decolonisation of literary studies, which may give unexpected insights
